UNT CTS Training Program

UNT CTS partners with UNT Counseling Psychology Program to train Counseling Psychology PhD students every fall and spring semester. CTS welcomes practicum and internship  applicants through an application process from UNT and TWU graduate training programs in mental health counseling. Examples of academic programs that have had practicum students engaged at Counseling and Testing Services include: UNT Masters Counseling student, UNT Rehabilitation Counseling students and UNT Social Work students.  CTS requires a minimum 2 semester commitment from all trainees. 

UNT Counseling and Testing Services does not have an American Psychological Association accredited doctoral internship training program. 

Training Mission

At UNT Counseling and Testing Services we strive for intentionality; to be deliberate in our training and clinical practice.  We are here to help and serve the UNT community, which includes our practicum interns.  Our training includes observation of clinical practice, goal-setting, skills training, feedback, continuous assessment, experiential learning, and reflection.  We are dedicated to offering a positive training experience in which our trainees develop a broader range of clinical skills, a greater understanding of their professional identity, and a readiness for the next phase in their training development.

About the Training Program

Our training program is influenced by principals from the Integrated Developmental Model (Stoltenberg, McNeill, & Delworth, 1998), Relational Cultural Theory (Jordan, 2009), and the Scientist-Practitioner Model (Stoltenberg et al. 2000). We emphasize the process of training and supervision, the roles of supervisor and supervisee, and the integration of evidence-based interventions. Training tasks and contextual factors are flexible to the needs of the student clinician. Supervision is a mutually valued, growth-fostering experience and a crucial component to our training program.

Hour requirements can vary by academic program and MOUs with each department.

Examples of weekly hour requirements:

Practicum Training Activities include:

• Learning HIPAA Compliant practices for Electronic Record Keeping utilizing Titanium Software
• Providing individual therapy
• Initial Consultations
• Providing referrals to on-campus and off-campus community services
• Optional: outreach programming, group therapy and workshops

Eligibility and Requirements

UNT CTS  offers a captive practicum program in partnership with UNT Counseling Psychology Phd program.

UNT Counseling Psychology PhD 3rd years. However, minimum requirements include:

• Passing a Criminal History Check
• Possession of liability insurance
• Approval from the academic program to proceed with practicum

4th year and above PhD students are welcome to apply for an Advanced Externship position at CTS. 

Master’s and PhD students studying locally to be mental health therapists are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates must meet minimum requirements above and complete our application process.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES: (THE 2026-2027 APPLICATION PROCESS IS CLOSED)

WE ARE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR FALL 2027-2028. APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY 5PM MONDAY, 3/8/2027. INTERVIEWS WILL BE HELD BETWEEN 3/10/27 AND 3/16/27. WE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING APPLICANTS FOR SUMMER 2027 THIS YEAR.

1. Complete online CTS Training Program Application Form
2. Curriculum Vitae/Resume emailed to Arlene.RiveroCarr@unt.edu
3. Cover letter describing your fit with our training program, reasons for applying and your goals for your training year emailed to: Arlene.RiveroCarr@unt.edu
4. Readiness for Training Program Form to be completed by your training director, advisor or professor who has supervised your clinical work 

Upon acceptance, trainees will be required to undergo a Criminal History Check and provide proof of clinical liability insurance.
